Le Magasin

Didier Milleriot traveled to Chicago often, and while he loved the city, he wondered at the lack of home decor products from his native France. So four years ago, the Parisian took up residence in River North, and Le Magasin became the source for hard to find French finery for the home.

Milleriot always stocks the staples that spurred him to open Le Magasin in the first place: heavy French damask linen in a rainbow of lively hues, and handmade Marie Daage Limoge china.

Each item has a story and history, one that Milleriot will gladly expound upon as he guides customers through the various room settings that comprise his cozy shop. The store itself is laid out like a French country home with an enviably well-stocked butler’s pantry and linen closet.

When Le Magasin made its debut, it was the only place in the United States to carry its distinctive jacquard table linens and bedding. But thanks to the reams of attention paid to Le Magasin in the national press, other purveyors have begun selling similar products. The shop does remain the exclusive resource of the original in Illinois, and Milleriot takes care to offer French delicacies beyond the woven sort.

“This is a very personal store,” he said. “I carry things not because they will sell, but because I love them.” Milleriot happily works with customers to create one-of-a-kind table settings, matching linens with china and crystal.

Buying trips to France yield a treasure trove of uniquely decorative items, such as framed prints from Parisian antique stores, tiny table lamps, and a small selection of bath salts, toiletries and towels.

A trip to Le Magasin will never be the same as a visit to Paris. But after a visit to this cute shop just north of the Chicago River, you can enjoy an espresso at home in your new demitasse cup without the long flights, the security lines, the jet lag, or the euro.

Le Magasin will be closed from September 2 through September 18, 2007, when Milleriot returns from Paris with new merchandise.
