Bringing the Medina Home
When Nadia Rahmani moved to Chicago, she brought a little bit of home with her. Home being Morocco by way of Paris, where she had earned an MBA in International Marketing. “There was nothing interesting in my field here,” she recalls. “But I have a passion for Moroccan handcrafts.”
Now that passion is on display at her Andersonville shop, Marrakech Treasures. Entering the store is like a trip to a Moroccan market, but without the live animals and loud haggling over prices. Rather, the richly colored walls, flickering candles and lush fabrics help to create a soothing, contemporary version of a distinctly Moroccan experience.

Traditional silver jewelry and serving pieces sit alongside ornate glass jars, carved boxes and goatskin lamps. Unique occasional furniture pieces are perfect for any artistic environment, and outdoor items can help create a relaxing Moroccan garden retreat in urban Chicago.
Marrakech Treasures also stocks an incredible selection of candles – from tabletop size to stunning six-foot wax pillars, hollowed out for tea lights to glow through their hand-carved North African designs.

Select apparel items include hand-sewn and embellished caftans as well as woven jalabas – traditional robes best described as Moroccan hoodies. And rich Moroccan leather gleams throughout the shop – shoes and slippers piled high in baskets, brightly colored hand-tooled bags and belts hanging from walls and ceiling.
Everything comes from local artisans that Rahmani meets on buying trips back to her native land. “There is so much history here,” she says of her shop’s extraordinary wares. “Each piece is unique and made by hand without the help of modern machinery.”
