Posh has been bringing its eclectic take on housewares to the city for more than a decade now, delighting customers with one of kind flea market finds, vintage tableware and sophisticated accents in a way that makes the old feel new again.
This unique, homey store certainly ranks as one of Chicago’s hidden treasures.
“We have a lot of antiques, but it doesn’t feel like an antique shop,” explains owner Karl Sorensen. “We mix the new with classic pieces, which, at the end of the day is how everybody lives anyway.”
Posh largely features what’s known in the trade as “smalls,” vintage pieces such as individual plates, knife rests and napkin rings that are too little to provide much payoff to retailers. “Typical antique stores don’t deal with ‘smalls,’ said Sorensen. “But it’s what gives the shop character, and for $10 you can buy a vintage ashtray from a little French bistro.”
Prices range from $600 for a serving platter to $4 for a small ceramic bird traditionally used to shape and cool pies, sensibly called a pie bird. From egg cups to hotel silver to the casually elegant china from French maker Côté Table, Posh is a treasure trove of lovely items for the home.
And while Posh sticks to its staple of vintage tableware, accent pieces and gift items change throughout the year. You never know what Sorensen’s numerous buying trips abroad might bring back to Chicago. He also takes requests, and devoted Posh customers count on the staff to be on the lookout for favorite pieces, often from specific sentimental locations.
Posh relocated from Lakeview to River North three years ago, doubling in size but losing none of its charm. Though some of the store’s more eclectic items, such as entire dish sets from defunct cruise lines and hotels, has been replaced by more refined European wares, the store has managed to retain all of its unique charm.
