From Hippy to Affordably Hip
Tie-dye to today, Presence stays relevant. It doesn’t sell the latest $300 jeans, and you won’t find a single brand sported by the celebrity du jour, but Presence is still a regular stop on a fanciful fashionista’s shopping route.
The 37-year-old shop now occupies its third location, having moved twice from its original home, the Lincoln Park living room of founder Betsy Nore. Just returned from the Peace Corps, Nore began selling granola, incense and other hippie staples, including tie-dyed apparel, a skill she picked up as a volunteer.
Long after it morphed into a successful Lincoln Park boutique, Presence moved to its Andersonville location seven years ago. The shop is now run by Nore’s 25-year-old daughter, Joanna Miner – whose parents actually met at the original shop. Miner has remained true to her mother’s vision and inexpensive; fun and funky are the buzzwords here.
The shop stocks trendy, affordably priced pieces perfect for the younger set. But even if you’re well past college and inclined to splurge at Scoop, Presence provides an affordable opportunity to go ahead and get that super trendy cropped jacket or roll top skirt that will most certainly fall from favor by next season.
Merchandise arrives nearly every day and sales are almost constant. If $40 for a blue bandanna print halter dress seems steep in June, it might just drop to $19 by July. But at less than $30, that 60’s style shift dress in this season’s perfect shade of green will probably not hang around for long.
Inexpensive, fun and funky describe the shop’s selection of belts, hats, bags, hosiery and costume jewelry as well. And double-lined tees and wide-strapped tanks for under $10 will keep you in basics without breaking the bank.
