One of a Kind Style
Showing up at a party in the same dress as another woman is one of the cardinal style sins, and the only really good way to avoid this kind of mishap is to seek out unique designers and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
Roslyn, a recently opened Bucktown boutique, may be the best antidote to this kind of fashion disaster. For one thing, the owner, Rosie Dulyapaibul buys only four of each item, and once something is sold out, it’s gone. (So you had better shop early and often.)
And further, she makes a point of carrying hard-to-find designers, names known only to fashion insiders. Every season, she scours the New York showrooms for the best new talent and brings it home to Chicago.
Rosie is originally from Chicago, but worked in New York for several years before moving back home to open her boutique. Though her previous experience as a buyer for Abercrombie & Fitch and J.Crew was very useful, Rosie was looking forward to having more contact with her customers.
One thing she learned is that there is no such thing as the average Roslyn customer. “There’s a whole mix of ages and types,” she says, “but they all want to experiment with fashion without sacrificing their personal style.”

In defining her buying choices, Rosie explains, “It needs to be sophisticated but with an edge. If it doesn’t fit that description, I’m not going to carry it.”
Helping to give each piece the personal connection that's impossible with bigger labels, the shop is set up like an art gallery, with small plaques by the racks describing each designer’s background and philosophy.
Some of the labels she carries include Miranda Bennett (a recent graduate of the Parsons School of Design who is known for her versatile, classically feminine pieces), Vera Wang Lavender, Lauren Moffat, and Jovovich-Hawk.
For spring 2007, Rosie is focusing on dresses for both day and evening, featuring “a pale neutral color palette with pops of bright color like citron and cobalt.” She also likes menswear-inspired shapes and bold metallics, both as accessories and as the focus of an ensemble.
Rosie believes that every woman should own “the perfect evening dress that’s stylish, timeless, and most importantly, comfortable,” and a great, fitted white button-down shirt. Another favorite is Andrea Bruckner handbags. “I have the saddle bag, and it just gets better as it gets older.”
Her boutique is a one-stop shop for these wardrobe essentials and more – definitely the spot for uniquely chic clothing and accessories. She even lets the guys in on the fun – there’s a rack of menswear (designers include John Bartlett, Alexander Wang, and Steve Alan).
Roslyn is the kind of boutique that lends itself to calculated risk-taking. Fortunately, since the merchandise is carefully edited, it’s difficult to go wrong.
