Sprout Home has garnered such national attention and praise since it opened in 2003 that Chicago’s other home decor shops could understandably envy its star status. But as in “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” Sprout is absolutely that and more.   

The concept of owner Tara Heibel, this garden center and home accessories store with a modern twist has never strayed from its roots.

With a sizable outdoor area that changes greenery with the Chicago seasons, including transforming into a Christmas tree lot in December, Sprout Home offers indoor and outdoor pleasures for the urban gardener.   

Tree-sized plants and shrubbery look great in the ground or in giant planters, the likes of which grace the rooftop settings of boutique hotels. Succulents and air plants, requiring little care or water, are perfect for city dwellers with busy lives.

Planted in containers of bright white or brilliant chartreuse, they offer more drama than ordinary houseplants. And glass terrariums invite your inner artiste to create diorama-like settings for your mantle or tabletop.   

    

But Sprout Home is more than just a hip greenhouse. Delicate white vases covered in ceramic rose buds sit next to bud vases shaped like handguns. Graffiti-covered lampshades hang from the ceiling over tables and stools made from carved driftwood.

Giant ceramic lamps, containers and hanging fixtures in orange and green are nestled among the live plants, and place settings in both ceramic and melamine work indoors as well as out. Wall decals – a super-hot trend for the home – let you apply geometric or organic shapes to painted surfaces without the commitment of wallpaper.  

Sprout Home also offers a gift registry for weddings and new arrivals, and its own organic co-op that delivers herbs and vegetables monthly to members.

The shop’s national acclaim and extensive website reach far beyond Chicago, but there’s nothing quite like getting up close and personal with some of the country’s edgiest garden and home supplies, right here at Home.
