Stitch

A Stitch in Time

In 1996, Stitch introduced contemporary, well-priced furnishings to Chicago when most other options were the high-end Merchandise Mart showrooms and the occasional collection at Crate and Barrel.

Since then many new shops have popped up to offer contemporary home designs, but owner Pamela Hewett manages to keep the strictly edited selection in her Bucktown store fresh and unique.

Best-selling items, such as sleek sectional sofas, are accompanied by a constantly evolving selection of coordinating pieces. The design aesthetic is basically “urban loft” – clean strong lines with an eclectic twist that includes whimsical accents, fabrics and lighting.

“We find our customers have grown up with us and are looking to update as we do,” said Hewett. To that end, she offers a hand-finished rug or oversized Baroque mirror to complement a clean-lined contemporary dining group.

In the shop, a limed wood parsons desk is comfortably at home with a Chinese Chippendale-style chair and chartreuse leather executive set. While a Louis XV-style chair (which can be ordered with any number of custom fabrics) looks smashing with a mid-century end table. Flatware, place settings, vases, throws and bedding make stylish  statements of their own.

Stitch was an early supporter of Jonathon Adler pottery and continues to sell a selection of his work. The shop is among the few local purveyors carrying the Missoni Home Collection, with throws, pillows, towels, robes and rugs in Missoni’s signature-bright, colorful designs.

But Stitch isn’t just about home decor. “We’re a lifestyle boutique,” explains Hewett. “Our goods are carefully chosen to complement the lives of our exceptional customers – North Shore and Wicker Park alike.”

Among the uber-stylish wearable pieces are unique, soft as butter lambskin handbags from Shih and Cri Cri. Personal furnishings and accessories, many from local designers, include wallets, executive and wedding gifts, laptop carriers, unique jewelry and striking sunglasses.

In a sea of national chains and catalog sameness, Stitch stands out in style.
