Something Old is New Again

White Attic beckons passersby with irresistible, ever-changing window displays that daringly match freshly painted antique furniture with of-the-moment accent pieces.
Inside the shop is a veritable treasure trove of beautifully updated vintage pieces. Each item has been personally selected by owner Terry Ledford. Painted, its hardware often changed and updated, the “new” piece is ready to add pizzaz to any room.

While not limited to any one school of design, Ledford does have a basic formula. As the store’s name suggests, many of the pieces are repainted a glossy white. Black occupies an equal amount of floor space, and each season there are one or two colors featured. “We’re constantly evolving but do have a common theme,” he said. “We always have the white and black pieces, but then have fun with some of the new stuff.”
Ledford draws from his experience in the apparel industry – he worked as a visual merchandiser for Banana Republic and Ann Taylor stores – and manages to stay right on color trends each season. This fall, expect to find lots of bright orange and teal.
White Attic stocks vintage pieces from the early 1900s and forward. Danish modern credenzas and desks painted black, often in whiskered brush strokes, sit alongside white lacquered end tables – a touch of modern glamour. White or brightly colored painted dressers and changing tables are much sought after for the fashionable child’s room.
And a selection of decorative items makes White Attic a great source for gift items. Recent finds include pale blue paisley print coasters and resin trays featuring animal images lifted from photos taken in rural France.
Ledford regularly scours flea markets and estate sales. The selection changes frequently and many pieces, once gone, can’t be replicated. Like those white Chinese Chippendale style chairs with aqua seats that were sadly gone all too soon.
