It’s in the Details at PS:Accessories
“I always choose style over brand,” says Shelly Meekma, owner of PS Accessories in Chicago’s fashionable Gold Coast. “But I still make sure that everything in my boutique is the best possible quality for the price.”
If you’re the type who loves to express different sides of your personality through fashion, PS Accessories is the place for you. “I stock tons of different looks to fit the various needs of my customers.”
Located near the busy intersection of State and Division, Shelly’s boutique has a diverse customer base devoted to the store and its up-to-the-minute selection of chic flats, slouchy hobo bags, and show-stopping heels.
Shelly opened PS Accessories four years ago, after quitting her corporate job to follow her passion for fashion. She happened upon her location almost by accident. “There used to be another shoe store in the same spot, and I’d been working there for a while when the owner asked if I wanted to take over her lease.” Fortunately for local accessory fanatics, Shelly decided to make a go of it and PS Accessories was born.
She gets new merchandise in almost every week, thanks to the high turnover and lots of sales. “I have tons of regulars in the neighborhood and they’re always looking for fresh looks.”
Some recent favorites have been peep-toe patent platforms by Oh Deer and colorful print pumps by Naughty Monkey. “Anything patent has been really popular, as well as espadrille and cork sandals.” Other current offerings include muted metallic clutches and buttery soft leather belts.
PS Accessories is the place to go if you’re looking for fun pieces to take on vacation. Some selections include crushable straw hats with UPF sun protection factor and breezy tunics that could be worn over swimsuits or with jeans. Travelers will also appreciate the soft, lightweight bamboo shawls in brilliant colors.
Shelly also carries lots of items that are perfect for busy working women – her stylish laptop bags and wheeled suitcases “are good for a business environment but still very chic.”
For next fall, PS Accessories is doing more boots and some funkier high heels. “I’m also expanding into clothing with fun tops and casual dresses.” However, don’t look to PS Accessories for flash-in-the-pan trends. “I try to go for classic style over trends. I want to stock items that women wear for a long period of time, not just for a month or two before fashion magazines move on to something else.” Keeping this in mind, she’s doing lots of long chain necklaces for summer and fall – “the look started as a trend, but it’s quickly turning in to a new classic,” she says.
Having fun with fashion is an essential part of the PS Accessories philosophy. For instance, two prominently displayed placards state, “if it doesn’t fit, it’s ugly anyways” and “life is short, buy more shoes.” PS Accessories can definitely help you obey the second one with its “to die for” assortment of shoes, bags, and accessories.
